Five

There were five of us.

Of course, there were more than five girls at Yuri’s place, but there were five of us who were very close.

I hardly remember anything about them, and it feels like this colossal effort to try to recall their names. But I do remember. I try very hard to remember, because that seems terribly important. They must have names. They must have the right names. As soon as I do, I get other things. I get their faces.

Eva, Alyona, and Agrifina. Evechka, Leonya, and Grusha.

Mainly, I get just a feeling. Safety, maybe. A feeling of joy, as though it always felt wonderful to be together. I imagine it did.

I miss them so badly.

I am so glad that you had their love and support for awhile, although I am just as sorry that you lost th all so abruptly.
